Washington, DC - Today, National Stonewall Democrats congratulated Sharon
J. Lettman, member of our Board of Directors, on being selected as Executive Director of the National
Black Justice Coalition. Headquartered in Washington, DC, The National
Black Justice Coalition is a civil rights organization dedicated to
empowering Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and
ending racism and homophobia.
"I'm
a proud member of the Board of Directors of Stonewall Democrats, and I
look forward to finding more opportunities for these two great
organizations to work together in the future," Lettman said.
Lettman
is not new to the work of finding common ground among progressive
communities. Before joining the team at the National Black Justice
Coalition, she spent eight years at People for the American Way and the
People for the American Way Foundation, where, most recently, she
served as Executive Vice President for Leadership Programs and External
Affairs. In that capacity, Lettman oversaw the organizations'
leadership programs and African American Religious Affairs.
She began her career as Executive Director of the Florida Student
Association (FSA) and then served as the Director of Communications for
the Florida Association of Counties (FAC). Subsequently, she built a
successful public affairs firm, P&P Communications, which worked
for clients including the American Federation of State, County and
Municipal Employees (AFSCME), Service Employees International Union
(SEIU), the National Education Association (NEA), the National
Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)and The Schott
Foundation for Public Education, among others. In addition, in 2008,
The Gill Foundation highlighted Lettman in its annual report as a "key
ally" for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender equality movement.
