Stein Club Honors Councilmember Phil Mendelson, Clark Ray, Lynne Brown, Us Helping Us and the Equality Caucus of the US House of Representatives

Washington, DC - The Gertrude Stein Democratic Club (Stein Club), the largest LGBT political organization in the District, will hold its 32nd Anniversary and Leadership Awards on September 3, 2008 and will honor five individuals and organizations that will be recognized for their outstanding accomplishments and contributions to advance the rights of the LGBT community. Honorees:

Councilmember Phil Mendelson - Councilmember At-Large - Council of the District of Columbia
Wanda Alston Democratic Service Award

Councilmember Phil Mendelson currently serves as councilmember At-Large in the Council of the District of Columbia.  Councilmember Mendelson was first elected to the DC Council in November 1998. He chairs the Committee on Public Safety and the Judiciary and is a member of four additional committees: Health; Housing and Urban Affairs; Human Services; and Libraries, Parks, and Recreation.  He previously served as an ANC Commissioner until he took office as an At-Large member of the DC Council.  Councilmember Mendelson has been a leader in promoting and advancing domestic partnership rights in the District and working with other councilmember to pass and continuously improve domestic partnership legislation in the District.  The Stein Club recognizes Councilmember Mendelson for his support to the LGBT community and commitment to advance our rights through domestic partnership legislation and in other areas.

Clark Ray - Director of Park and Recreations
Heil-Balin Community Service Award

Clark E. Ray currently serves as a member of Mayor Fenty's Cabinet as Director of Parks and Recreations.  He was nominated by Mayor Adrian M. Fenty as Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) in August 2007, and was confirmed by the Council of the District of Columbia in January 2008.  Mr. Ray has had several important leadership roles in Washington, DC, as Director of the Mayor's Office of Community Relations and Services, where he was responsible for leading the charge to improve the quality of life for District residents through increasing the visibility of the Mayor's constituent services efforts, as Director of External Affairs for the DC Sports and Entertainment Commission, and as a Neighborhood Services Coordinator in the Office of Neighborhood Services of the Executive Office of the Mayor.  In this position, he led a core team of government and community partners that worked to identify and resolve persistent and chronic issues across the city.  Mr. Ray was instrumental in the election of Mayor Fenty and in supporting greater participation of the LGBT community in the District's elections. 

Lynne Brown - Publisher of the Washington Blade
Justice Award

Lynne Brown is currently Publisher of the Washington Blade, and has a long track record of success with the Washington Blade newspaper, where she has held various leadership positions including Sales Manager and Director of Business Development. Brown became publisher of the Washington Blade - in 2007. Supporting the growth of DC's  LGBT newspaper of record has been Lynne's commitment in her life's work.  In her 20 years of service the Blade has grown into the nationally recognized, award winning publication you read every Friday.  Lynne has dedicated most of her professional and volunteer work to promote Justice for the LGBT community.  She has contributed to advancing the rights of our community in different leadership roles including the media, her service in key business organizations such as PEN, Metro Washington's LGBT Chamber of Commerce, as a board members and officer of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and as Co-Chair of the Mautner Project's 18 Annual Gala.  Most recently, Brown was awarded "Business Person of the Year" by PEN, Metro Washington's LGBT Chamber of Commerce. Brown is currently serving as Co-Chair of the Mautner Project's 18th Annual GALA "Big Love" scheduled for February 14th 2009.  Other past community service includes the D.C.'s Rape Crisis Center and the Lesbian and Gay Chorus of Washington.

Us Helping US
Justice Award

US Helping US (UHU) was incorporated in 1988 and is today one of the largest 501(c)(3) Black AIDS organizations in the nation, serving Washington, D.C., suburban Maryland, and northern Virginia.  The mission of UHU is to reduce HIV infection in the Black community, by providing HIV counseling, testing and referral (CTR) services to men and women, and it specializes in HIV education and risk reduction programs for Black gay/bisexual men and transgender persons.  With a 15 full-time staff, ten hourly staff, and over 50 volunteers, UHU provides an array of community-level, group-level and individual-level programs, including Street and venue-based outreach, the Popular Opinion Leader intervention adapted for Black gay men social networks, and barbershops and beauty shops, community forums to discuss HIV-related stigma and homophobia, and dissemination of information about participation in clinical trials for a HIV vaccine.  The Stein Club recognizes UHU for its leadership and service to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS in the African American LGBT community and in the Washington, DC area.                                                                 

Equality Caucus of the US House of Representatives
Richard Rausch Equality Award

The Stein Club recognizes the newly created Equality Caucus of the US House of Representatives, co-founded by Congressman Barney Frank and Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin.  We commend Congressman Frank and Congresswoman Baldwin, and the other members of Congress who joined as members of the Equality Caucus, for their outstanding leadership in promoting equality for the LGBT community.  We recognize the Equality Caucus as a significant development in raising awareness of issues impacting LGBT individuals and in advancing the rights of our community.
